  1. Anybody who thinks that an antivirus is going to be useful on an android phone is sorely mistaken.

    First off, because of the way that android is designed, the only things that an antivirus could possibly check are (1) itself, and (2) the sdcard contents.

    An antivirus obviously doesn’t need to check itself, since if it is compromised, so are its scan results (in other words, an infected antivirus program would NOT be able to detect that it is infected).

    The sdcard is mounted WITHOUT EXECUTE permissions, therefore any kind of virus that may be stored on the sdcard is effectively neutralized.

    A very important point that people need to realize is this;
    EACH ANDROID APPLICATION runs as its OWN USER. If you install a dangerous program, its damage is restricted to (a) itself, and (b) whatever additional permissions you give it…. which is NOT something that can be checked by some OTHER program. Note that the additional permissions means that that application gets to use API calls to perform specific functions, like read the contact list and connect to the internet, potentially sending your contact list to some spammer in some country whose name can’t be pronounced. IF A PROGRAM does this, your “antivirus” program would be UNABLE TO TELL — because it simply DOES NOT HAVE ACCESS!!!!

    Here is a simple fact:
    ALL android programs that claim to be an antivirus are one of two things;
    1) SCAM to take your $$,
    2) SPYWARE. Yes, it is possible to install spyware on an android phone. No, it is not possible to detect it as such.

    *** IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO VERIFY SOFTWARE THAT YOU INSTALL!!!! NO VIRUS SCANNER CAN DO THAT FOR YOU.

    *** IF YOU ARE INSTALLING A PROGRAM THAT ASKS FOR PERMISSIONS THAT IT OBVIOUSLY DOES NOT NEED, DO NOT CONTINUE!!! FOR EXAMPLE, A BINARY CALCULATOR THAT ASKS FOR INTERNET AND READ/WRITE CONTACT DATABASE — WHY WOULD IT NEED THAT? IT DOESN’T!!! DO NOT ALLOW!

    *** AVOID SOFTWARE REQUESTING IMPORTANT PERMISSIONS WHEN COMING FROM AN UNKNOWN DEVELOPER!
