Acer Android Tablet Spotted

No Comments Android, Tablet

Last month Acer announced its new 7-inch and 10.1-inch Tablets in the New York based event. We spotted videos of both the Acer Tablets running Android on YouTube. Both the videos reflect the usage of gyroscope to flip through pages of magazine or a book. The tablet has Acer UI 4.5 layered over the Android interface and flashed innovative zooming gestures, as well.

At the Acer’s Conference, the 10.1-inch Android running tablet was displayed with aluminium casing that supports a dual-core 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon chipsets. However, the experts believe that Nvidia Tegra 2 SoC might be the answer for the tablet. The capacitive touchscreen supports 1280×800 pixel resolution display.

Watch the videos and enjoy the eBook application that flips pages based on the gyroscope.

New Andoid Market

The Android Market has being going through all kinds of changes lately, from UI to payment method, and the not-so-good 15 minutes paid app return policy. Seems like it all set and done as Google send this email to developer today.

Hello,

We’re writing to inform you about some changes to Android Market that require your attention.

As we mentioned in an email sent last week, we’ve been updating Android Market with several new features that may affect your applications. That update is now complete and the features are now active:

* The purchase refund period is now 15 minutes, and the maximum size for .apk files is now 50MB.

* The details page for every app now displays the app’s “Promotional Graphic” assets at the top.

* Market is now capable of filtering based on screen sizes and densities. NOTE: Filtering based on GL texture compression formats is not active at this time, but will be available in early January 2011.

* Applications are now automatically added to new Live Wallpapers and Widgets categories, as appropriate.

We’ve also activated two new features on the Publisher site:

* The maximum size of the description field for an application is raised to 4000 characters.

* A minimum of two screen shots is now required for all applications. You can supply up to eight screenshots for each application.

Additionally, we’ve recently redesigned the categories on Android Market to better support users and developers. We’ve split some popular categories, renamed others, and added completely new categories. At this time, we recommend that you take a look at the categories and ensure that your applications are assigned to the best categories for them. For details, see the Android Market Help Center:

Finally, we wanted to bring to your attention that Android Market now offers a new form of payment for users on the AT&T network — Direct Carrier Billing. This payment option lets Android users on the AT&T network purchase applications more easily.

Thank you once again for your continued support of Android Market.

Regards,
The Android Market Team

Android Market now supports Direct Carrier Billing for AT&T

No Comments Android, Android Apps

If the Android Market payment option or lack of it is being stopping you from buy apps, better days are coming. On the Android developer blog, Google announced yesterday that the Android Market now supports Direct Carrier Billing for AT&T customers. The option will allow AT&T customers to buy apps by adding the payment to their monthly bill. Think of it as a buy now pay later program. Hopefully other carriers will adoption this option soon.

One Android lawsuit won, more to go

No Comments Android

In the case Erich Specht VS. Android Inc, and Open Handset Alliance on the trademark for Android, Android Inc. won. Apparently, the court wasn’t swayed by the website that Specht threw up in order to prove he was still using the mark after his company went under in 2002. The judge then punctuated the decision with a cancelation of Specht’s “Android Data” trademark on grounds that he attempted to use it as a “sword” against Google and because it could create confusion with the little green bot that consumers have become so enamored with.

Erich Specht has sued Google  for infringing use of the name “Android.” He’s the owner of the trademark for Android Data Corporation, granted way back in October of 2002. Google came around and filed a trademark application for Android five years later and, wait for it, had that trademark application denied due to confusion with Mr. Specht’s.

Well now that one is over, there are logs of lawsuits still in progress with Apple, Oracle, Microsoft, and many other companies with probably haven’t heard of. Those will definitely be very difficult given that these are big corporation with deep pockets enough to hire the best lawyers in town. The only thing you should know is that the green robot is here to stay.
