Working in the Library is the world’s best job for all those who worship books, but shelf reading is the most dreaded job. You need to verify all the books on a shelf are in the correct order, based on their call numbers. Books tend to get out of order easily, when they’re taken off the shelf.
Miami University’s Augmented Reality Research Group (MU ARRG), led by Professor Bo Brinkman, has developed an Android app that could save librarians time and hassle of performing this anxious job. Using the camera on the Android phone the app “reads” a bookshelf, and with an AR overlay, quickly flags those books that are misplaced. It will also point to the correct place on the bookshelf so the book can easily be re-shelved correctly.
