25 infected apps found in the Android Market

Infected apps are becoming a routine in the Android Market. Over the weekend, mobile security firm Lookout announced that they have found 25 new infected apps in the Android Market. The company said these apps are likely developed by the same people that did the March attack which included 50 apps.

The infected apps were packaged in copies of legitimate apps, listed below, and posted to Google’s Android market by four fraudulent developers, Lookout says: Magic Photo Studio, Mango Studio, E.T. Tean, and BeeGoo.

The list of infected applications (by developer name) includes:

  • Beauty Breasts
  • Sex Sound

Lockout suggested you do the following to be safe:

  • Only download apps from trusted sources, such as reputable app markets. Remember to look at the developer name, reviews, and star ratings.
  • Always check the permissions an app requests. Use common sense to ensure that the permissions an app requests match the features the app provides.
  • Be alert for unusual behavior on your phone. This behavior could be a sign that your phone is infected. These behaviors may include unusual SMS or network activity.
  • Download a mobile security app for your phone that scans every app you download to ensure it’s safe. Lookout users automatically receive protection against this Trojan.

    Google pulled popular game emulators for the Android Market

    Google has pulled popular game emulator apps, including Nesoid, Snesoid, N64oidGensoid among others, from the Android Market. Google also went further to revoke the developer right on the Yong Zhang, the developer.

    Yong has now listed his entire *oid line of emulator apps, completely free, at SlideME for a two-week-period to allow current users who’ve already purchased them to get a copy before it’s too late. If you were thinking of getting one of them and just hadn’t gotten around to it, now’s the time—they may not be there much long. This will also be a good time to backup and keep them in a safe place if your already have them.

    How To: Root Archos Gen8 Android Tablet

    If you own Archos Gen8 Android Tablet and can’t wait to have to root it, read on for the complete instructions to guide you through the process.

     Requirements:

     Procedure:

    Step 1: Reboot the device and keep the “Vol-” button pressed after the screen goes black. It gets the laptop into recovery mode.

     Step 2: Choose the “Update Firmware” option and connect your device to your computer via USB.

    Step 3: Transfer the SDE firmware to the tablet and safely remove the device from the USB devices on your computer.

    Step 4: Select ‘OK’> Archos SDE is installed> Reboot the device. Archos SDE has been successfully installed, now.

    Step 5: Install android firmware. Reboot the device and keep the ‘Volume down’ button pressed once the screen goes blank.

    Step 6: Select ‘Update Firmware’ option and connect your device to your computer via USB.

    Step 7: Now transfer the firmware file to your device and then safely remove the device from the USB devices on your computer.

     Step 8: Click ‘OK’ and after the firmware has been updated, reboot your device. The Archos Firmware should now be working on your device.

    Step 9: Now you can install the custom kernel + initramfs provided above. Reboot your tablet by holding down the volume button.

     Step10: Go to ‘Recovery Menu’ > ‘Developer Edition’ > ‘Flash kernel and initramfs’

     Step 11: Connect your tablet to your PC via USB, transfer the ‘zImage and initramfs.cpio.gz’ to it.

    Step 12: Safely disconnect the device from your computer.

    Step 13: Press ‘OK’  on your tablet and then reboot while holding the Volume Down button.

    Step 14: Now just keep the volume-down button pressed once the screen turns black.

     Step 15: Select ‘Developer Edition’, it will provide a temporary root access to your phone.

     Now you have temporary root access, and to gain permanent root the tablet as follows:

    Step 1: Reboot the device while keeping the ‘Volume Down’ keys pressed.

     Step 2: Go to ‘Recovery Menu’ > ‘Developer Edition Menu’ and select ‘Remove Android Kernel’

     Step 3: Reboot your device and you should now have permanent root on it.

    How To: Install ClockworkMod Recovery On Your Android Phone

    Clockwork Recovery aka ClockworkMod Recovery/ ClockworkMod is a recovery console for performing a wide range of operations on Android devices. People customizing their phones by flashing custom ROMS extensively use ClockworkMod. Additionally, it allows you to perform and restore backups of your Android phone. Luckily, installing it is a very easy process

    The phone must be rooted prior to the installation of ClockworkMod. Once the phone has been rooted, follow the below mentioned instructions to obtain ClockworkMod on your phone in a jiffy!

    Instructions:

    Step 1: Download free app ROM Manager from Android Market. Install it.

     Step 2: When installed, launch ROM Manager on the smartphone.

    Step 3: In ROM Manager, tap Flash ClockworkMod Recovery. Specify or confirm your phone model if prompted during the process, and follow any on-screen instructions.

    Step 4: It would take a few minutes for ClockworkMod Recovery to install. Upon successful completion of the process, ClockworkMod is ready for use.

    If you want to boot into ClockworkMod recovery, launch Rom Manager and tap ‘Reboot into Recovery

    How To Restore Nook Color To Factory Default via ADB

    Have you tried installing something that went wrong and now you want to revert to original factory default state?

    You can easily restore (unbrick) your Nook Color to its factory settings by following the instructions below. It will allow you to start fresh, as the device was the way, before you attempted to install that fancy app/custom ROM.

    Ingredients:

    • A bricked Nook Color
    • Android SDK installed and running
    •  Original Factory Boot Image
    • Original System Boot Image

     Procedure:

    Step 1: Download the above Boot and System Images.

    Step 2:  Unzip and extract to the root of your SD card.

    Step 3:  Plug your Nook color into your PC using USB Interface.

    Step 4:  Go to your Android SDK Folder and run ADB as instructed in the above tutorial.

     Step 5: Go to ADB Shell and type

    dd if=/sdcard/boot.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p1

    dd if=/sdcard/system.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p5

    This will restore :

    Nook Color’s Boot Image

    Nook Color’s System Image

    Nook Color’s Original Parition Structure

     Step 6: Type ‘adb reboot’ to reboot your Nook Color into original factory state.

     Viola! Your Nook Color has been restored to its original condition & settings.

    This procedure can also be used to unbrick your Nook Color if any issue during normal usage or flashing of any custom Android ROMs available like Honeycomb and Froyo.
