While Windows Phone is not doing well in the market, Microsoft is turning Android to a cash machine. Rumor has it that Microsoft could cash in $440 million this year in patent fees from Android phone from many Android hardware makers including HTC, Samsung, and others. With their new Android powered Nook expected in the market soon, Barnes and Noble doesn’t feel like join this charity organization so they decided to take it to the court calming that Microsoft is trying to “monopolize the mobile-device market by demanding patent royalties on electronics running” Android.
This is the part where I will advice you to go get some popcorn, patent lawsuits are using long and interesting with name calling and finger pointing. The “Kicker” is that the $440 million about 3 times as much as Microsoft will be making from Windows phone this year.
The trial on Microsoft’s patent claims against Barnes & Noble is scheduled for February inWashington. Laura Young, a spokeswoman with Microsoft, said the company had no comment on the Barnes & Noble filing.
The case is In the Matter of Certain Handheld Electronic Computing Devices, 337-769, U.S. International Trade Commission (Washington).
