Android is officially a wonder-kid. 850,000 Android devices is getting activated per day, that’s according to Android chief Andy Rubin, who unveiled the statistic on his Google+ page today. Google’s stance comes about two weeks after Motorola Mobility filed a lawsuit against Apple accusing the company of infringing on its technology patents. Motorola’s complaint, filed in a Florida federal court, concerns patents for the iPhone 4S and Apple’s iCloud service.

Patents has proved to be a key issue for Google and likely a primary impetus for the Motorola Mobility acquisition. That bid came after a very public spat this summer between Google, Apple and Microsoft over patents.

Apple versus Samsung, wait this time is not a lawsuit. Samsung may have come in second for the quarter but its 275 percent growth in shipments was tops among all five vendors. The company kept expanding its Galaxy-class lineup, focusing on both high-end handsets such as the Galaxy S II and the Nexus, and more mass-market products, including the Galaxy Ace and Galaxy Y.

Looking at the full year, Samsung actually emerged as the top smartphone maker over Apple, according to IDC, though just by a fraction. Samsung’s market share for 2011 rose to 19.1 percent from 7.5 percent a year ago, while Apple’s nestled in at 19 percent from 15.6 percent last year.
