How To: Remove AT&T Market Restrictions from Samsung Captivate

No Comments About, Android OS, How Tos

For those who purchased Samsung Captivate through AT&T, being able to see and download all applications listed on the Android Market was a big no-no, as the US carrier restricted users over a few Android apps. But with this guide, you’ll have smiles back on your faces, as your Android smartphone should not be subjected to cruelty, as Android is an open-source OS.

All thanks to Android community and developers who work hard to break the chains that certain carriers try to shackle the phone’s capabilities.

The particular restriction that AT&T has embedded into its Android smartphones is the censorship of the Android Market. This restriction can be easily won by emulating the T-Mobile market using a third-party application developed by Andrea Baccega called “Market Enabler”.

Instructions:

Step 1: Install Astro File Manager from Android Market.

Step 2: Download and install .apk file of Market Enabler by using the file manager. Save it on microSD card.

Step 3: Restart phone after the installation process is complete. Open Market Access application> Click Backup value > Hold “T-Mobile [US]“ option until “Emulate “T-Mobile” SIM? message flashes> Click Yes > Click back to Settings > Click the checkbox next to “Emulate on boot.”

Note: If you have to get back to the AT&T market, then click “Providers” instead of Backup value and carry on the remaining instructions in Step 3.

Viola! You’re phone should not give you access to all apps available in the Android Market. Let us know how well this worked in the comments below.

AT&T to allow third-party apps

No Comments Android, Android Apps, Service provider

Unless their phone is rooted, AT&T customers are not able to install third-party apps on their Android phones. This about to change, with Samsung infuse 4G, AT&T customers will be allow to install apps from other sources.

AT&T has restricted the ability to load apps from any source outside of the Android Market. So AT&T customers have being missing out on many great apps including those from sources like Gameloft, EA, even the new Amazon Apps Store.

AT&T customers will be very happy if this becomes the general rule onward.
